But as well, I think the adrenaline kicks in.
There’s a strange, heady mix of knowing you’re living in the moment.
This isn’t just, as I like to say, ‘I’m acting in the moment.’

But that’s some of the journalists that I spoke to.
That’s why they kept returning.
“Hed intimidate his critics and communicate propaganda.
A few people said to me, ‘Oh, how selfish.’
Oh, anything but selfishness!
People said, ‘But her children!’
All the children were grown up.
Get on with your life!
It’s complex, and it’s for an outsider to have those opinions.
But I was very much like, ‘Get over it and get on with it.’
[Laughs] It’s about making an impact in life.
Again, it was a battlefield at home at times.
Then there was support, obviously.
People rightly were concerned about their safety.”
The most prominent familial relationship featured, though, is that of Politkovskaya’s marriage to Alexander.
I love that, and I love that dynamic in their relationship and in their marriage.
I know the marriage suffered for it.
And the dynamic had been different.
It’s really interesting, especially the male-female dynamic.
I’ve been a foreign correspondent.
I have been in war, and she hasn’t.
That’s not what shed done as a journalist previously.
We improvised an awful lot.
The script was fine and great, but we bounced off it a lot.
I wasn’t there for very long, and James [Strong] is a wonderful, BAFTA-winning director.
James encouraged us to talk to each other.
I’m terrified for her, and she knows this.
And she’s terrified for herself, I’m just covering it.
So, there are all different layers of things going on."
Russia, in particular, has once again captured the public eyefor its latest atrocities in Ukraine.
“She’s made a couple.
Anna Politkovskaya is an extraordinary figure.
It felt like a story that needs to be told.”
I was only there for a week or so.
Maxine [Peake] is an amazing actress, but more importantly, the stories have such huge value.
Journalists all over the world have suffered at the hands of despotic regimes, and particularly the Russian one.
It wasn’t anything to think about.
“So, I know that she’s inherited that.
The notion that there would be any kind of challenge would only make her run at the problem.”
“Oh, it’s something we all face all the time,” Isaacs told Lovitt.
“Actually, oddly, this is a thing we face as a performer.
How much do you speak out about things when it compromises your career?”
“It’s not your enemies you often worry about,its your friends staying silent, your partners.
He has a buoyant career.
Even when she was intimidated, and even when she was poisoned, she persisted.
You’re either all in to hold your government accountable or youre not.
“But theres been so many calls to arms lately, and so few show up.”
