The term R-rated is synonymous with movies that are, for all intents and purposes, intended for adults.
But its not the highest rating in the U.S., given the existence ofthe controversial NC-17 rating.
Further, some particularly high-impact movies will be released unrated (see the recentTerrifierfilms, for example).

As such,if a super violent movie gets an R-rating, it can actually be surprising.
Its been a horror staple for years, and memorablybegan without too much by way of on-screen bloodshed.
Thats not a criticism; just an observation, or at least something worth considering.
