All the hesitations and stutters leading up to and during this quote reveal a kid with no real confidence.

He looks like a pretty normal kid, so this is an interesting moment.

She asks how that makes him feel, but he wants her to tell him something reassuring instead.

The camera stays on him, as we’re trying to gain insight into his mentality.

However, this statement doesn’t just work for this context.

It works for the entire episode, and actually comes across as a concise justification for the entire miniseries.

The camera motions toward Briony.

Then we only see the psychologist, and she won’t say if she likes him or not.

He’s then pulled out of the room by the guard without getting an answer.

Jaime has accidentally confessed to murder more than once during this conversation.

He’s been very antagonistic, too.

Yet he still thinks that she might like him, which displays an astounding lack of self-awareness.

He never seems more desperate than here.
