The history of Roman Polanski is almost as fascinating as his best films. He also directed one of the greatest feminist horror movies with Repulsion. Numbers don’t lie, right? The truth is that box-office attendance actually fell off by 2% between 2008 and 2009. Basically it was a record-breaking summer that felt more like a really successful spring. CL And now for the numbers themselves. It’s what we’ve got to work with. It depends on the film. Both studios are happy, sure. Number two was claimed by Paramount thanks mostly to “Transformers”. Disney’s “The Proposal”, on the other hand is an undeniable winner....
So what does that mean for the future of the franchise and director Sam Raimi’s involvement? What that means is…a lot of cooks have been preparing this meal. Vanderbilt has been hired to pen the fifth and sixth movies, which have an interconnected storyline. CL Of course with the movies so far away from being shot, that plan could be thrown out. Maybe “Spider-Man 4” makes a billion dollars and everyone takes bubble baths filled with hundred dollar bills....

At this time last year the box office was still being dominated by one blockbuster release - something to do with Batman, if I recall. The summer of 2009 has had nothing like the single-title excitement of “The Dark Knight”, however, and already in the last weekend of July the studios are throwing multiple, genre-specific titles at the screen to see what sticks. Disney has the CGI hamster action of “G-Force” out in both Digital 3D and standard versions and - if Friday’s opening day numbers are any indication - “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” may have a hard time holding on to the top spot against the cunning rodents....
Watchmen is one of the best films of 2009. It’s challenging, subversive, fascinating. Watchmen, the comic book was a revelation in its time. CL It took a part of our culture (superheroes through comic books) and perfectly dissected it. And yet Rorschach is the perfect distillation of elements that go into The Punisher and Batman. Dr. Manhattan is the god figure/ the superpowered being (like Superman, etc. ...
Sadly, it was not to be. I hate to invoke “The Dark Knight” here, but if the cape fits… Which brings us to “Bruno”. CL In all honesty, “Bruno” was lucky to score that highly. Not since “Watchmen” has so much been made over a cinematic appendage. Next week we get back to the multiple-release weekends of late July.
