What Is ‘Joe Versus the Volcano’ About?
The story follows hypochondriac Joe Banks (Hanks), a man beaten down by life.
Enter Samuel Graynamore (Lloyd Bridges), a billionaire who offers Joe a bizarre deal.

With nothing to lose, Joe says yes.
This leads him to meet Angelica, the daughter of Graynamore.
Ryan nails her portrayal of a woman who lives in luxury but is completely disconnected from reality.
Deeply insecure, she speaks in dramatic, existential musings about her poet-painter career.
Hes still searching for something deeper.
Finally, Joe meets Patricia, Angelicas half-sister and the captain of the yacht taking him to Waponi Woo.
Patricia is Joes true partner because she, like him, is searching for meaning.
In an ironic twist, the volcano spits them out, rejecting their sacrifice.
Turns out, the whole brain cloud diagnosis was a lie.
Unfortunately,Joe Versus the Volcanoflopped critically and commercially in 1990.
The story was too strange and philosophical from the typical rom-coms of the era.
Over the years, its gained a devoted following.
Its visually stunning, with a whimsical, almost dreamlike aesthetic that feels straight out of a storybook.
