Demi MooreandMargaret Qualleystunned audiences in their instantly belovedThe Substance.

What opens as a crime thriller wastes no time in showing its elasticity in genre-bending.

Though the opening sees some gnarly body horror, it ultimately serves asa classic detective introduction.

The change in focus never feels abrupt, though.

Throughout the entirety ofFeed, body horror is used to unnerve the audience, creating an atmospheric connective tissue.

The special effects used are beyond impressive, with every scene feeling visceral and immediate.

The goal is clearly to disturb the viewer with the over-exposure of Michael and Deirdres feeding kink.

Deirdrewantsto gain weight, and Michael espouses thatsociety is devastating womenby insisting on their thinness.

The characters find weight gain to be beautiful and erotic.

Jesse, played by actor Elle Fanning, stands sternly against a triangular black and red backdrop, her face heavily shadowed, in The Neon Demon

Is he holding women hostage and force-feeding them until they die?

The possibility of Michael being a serial killer preventsFeedfrom feeling like it is preaching to the audience.

None of these characters are morally superior.

For anyone who loved howThe Substanceraised an eyebrow at its audience’s preconceived notions, thenFeedis a must-watch.

WhereasThe Substancewas a hyper-pop homage to ’80s workout videos,Feedis a gritty ode to early ’00s internet culture.
