The most beautiful thing about movies is that they are an entirely subjective experience.
As such, one can very well watch a critically derided film and find lots to love about it.
Likewise, however, it’s perfectlypossible to watch a highly acclaimed movie and think its popularity is overblown.

Some of these movies I wouldn’t hesitate to call “bad.”
I can always admire when a filmmaker makes a project with tremendous cultural impact from a shoestring budget.
It’s filmmaking at its most rebellious and punk, butit sure has aged poorly.

A boring story, a forgettable protagonist, and a third act that goes absolutely nowhere.
I sort of understand the appeal for fans of campy B-movie classics, but that’s about it.
I have toagree withRoger Eberton this one:Texas Chain Sawsimply doesn’t do it for me.
The cinematography and creepy atmosphere are amazing, but the acting is atrocious, and the narrative is paper-thin.
Why do any of these characters do the things they do?
It has good, ethical intentions butexecutes its themes with such little thought that it’s almost funny.

By no stretch of the imagination would I ever think of callingHowl’sa bad or even lackluster film.
It looks and sounds incredible, but to what end?
FromThe TerminatortoTitanic, most of his filmography appeals to me greatly.
It has agedfar worse than many people give it credit for.

The impact of a romance film rests almost entirely on how much you root for the main couple.
It’s the kind of sappy, saccharine slop I’d rather avoid.
Except, unlike most people, my opinion on that movie isn’ttoofar below my opinion on its predecessor.
In my view,Jokeris one of the most overrated movies of the 2010s.
It doesn’t even dothatgood a job of ripping them off, either.
with anything other than a resounding “I love it.”

Coming out of the theater, I called it my favorite film of all time.
Nowadays, I’d barely call it a good movie.

It’s a cinematic achievement of unparalleled proportions, there’s no denying that.But in a vacuum?
That’s for sure.
Do I nevertheless wish it had been a better-written, better-directed movie?
Do I get why people still call it one of the best films ever made?
