The showhas been renewed for a second season, receiving the rare 22-episode order.

They take a stab at pick up right where they left off, though Amys feelings are conflicted.
JON-MICHAEL ECKER: It feels pretty amazing.
One: just because we had such a great time working on this show.

It was such a great crew and production, and the cast got along so well.
We’re very excited to get back to work.
Then also, like you said, it’s very elusive.
I’ve never done this many episodes.
I kind of have a history of doing one episode one and done.
It’s such a tough industry that we’re in that just having a job and paying rent.

I always feel very grateful for.
Then on top of it, just a great crew.
I mean, I couldnt think of anything to complain about.
Your cast is incredible.
Your writing’s been incredible.
I’d love to talk about the finale if we can, for a moment.
Watching it looked like this beautifully choreographed dance with all of you guys.
What was it like shooting that giant scene?
So that’s a lot of fun and exciting.
So my admiration goes out to see how they’re able to piece together scenes.
Its a lot of fun to watch.
So it didn’t necessarily feel as hectic as it looked?
ECKER: There’s times and there’s little pieces.
It’s like when they shoot a stadium shot or something.
But then it’s: how is that going to feel when they actually piece it all together?
It’s about trust in the writers and the director and their notes about things.
I think it ended up really nice.
Jon Ecker Embraces Dr. Jake Heller’s Kindness in ‘Doc’
It came togethersowell.
What I love about the show is that it goes beyond this typical medical drama.
He’s helping a patient pay for an electrical bill.
In the finale, he helps a guy who saves everybody to get the recognition.
That genuine kindness beyond being a good doctor.
I didn’t really know what was happening.
I’m not quite sure, I never really had that conversation.
I tend to not ask too many questions and let them tell me what they want me to know.
That’s probably why he was drawn towards medicine, as a way to help people.
A very straightforward, tangible way to make people feel better.
Sometimes that bleeds over into other aspects of the patients lives.
If I can see a way to help them out, I will.
Especially with the case of we don’t flesh out Jake’s personal life too much.
I always empathize with that.
That just kind of make him tick.
To that point, now you’re going to get a little more time to flesh that stuff out.
Have you guys talked at all about season two for that?
ECKER: I haven’t.
With press stuff and then obviously, we keep in touch through texts.
But I haven’t sat down with them and had a conversation about reallywherethey’re taking the storyline yet.
Im as eager as anybody else to find out.
‘Doc’s Season 1 Finale Complicates Things for Amy and Jake
Absolutely.
So that’s kind of nice.
I think from Jake’s point of view, he’s going to be very hurt by this.
Obviously he has a history of infidelity with his ex-wife so its a sensitive subject.
But at the same time, like we talked about, he’s a very empathetic person.
Its understandable wherever they go, it will make sense.
The kind of show that this is, it’s not just a straight infidelity, right?
It makes sense that she goes back to him, like you said.
It’s going to be difficult, I’m sure, for Jake tofullywrap his head around that.
ECKER: A love square or something, I dont know.
Now you have to work professionally with these two characters that you’re going to have some issues with.
That’s going to be tough to stomach.
Now with Doctor Maitra maybe stirring the pot a little bit, how is that going to go dramatic-wise?
ECKER: Again, there’s just a lot of different paths that the writers can take here.
But this is a slap in the face and who knows?
All of a sudden he might see her.
If she expresses how she feels to him, he might rethink their relationship.
Or he might just be like: you know what?
After this I just need a pause on relationships.
I don’t know, everything kind of makes sense in my head.
I just don’t know where they’re going to go with it.
Do you have a preference of where you want to go with it or are you open?
I have full faith in these writers.
They did something right.
They know what they’re doing to string together all these storylines in an appealing way.
I have trusted whatever way they choose will be the right one for this story.
It’s been really great to see.
The episode that shedoesdiscover the moment that you guys were together.
What’s it been like working with her?
Is she somebody that you’re happy to have that many scenes to share with?
ECKER: Yeah, I wasreally luckyto work with her.
Shes such a great person, so down to earth, and mellow, and easy to talk with.
I feel really lucky.
Plus, you know, she’s just a great actress.
It’s a great person to lean on.
But she’s one of the few people Ive worked with whereI was a big fan ofDeadwood.
I am obsessed withSix Feet Underand these other shows that shes been in
House of Cards.
We’re excited to have more scenes together.
But given how the season ends, who knows?
I think you’re going to have some scenes, just maybe some different ones for sure.
Well explore a different side of that dynamic.
