Created byBruce Millerand starringElisabeth Moss, the series came out in 2017 to critical acclaim.
And, yet, 30 years later, almost no one remembers it.
But how exactly did this happen?

Still, the gist is pretty much the same.
In fact, one could say that its precisely in this sameness that lies the issue.
Schlondorffs and Pinters approach to Offreds story is quite faithful to their source material.

Atwoods Offred is not a freedom fighter, nor does she become one over the course of the novel.
Shes just a regular individual swallowed by an enormous fascist wave.
She isnt exactly complicit in her own oppression, but she doesnt know how to fight back either.

Its a far cry from the rebellious June portrayed by Moss, even in the shows first season.
Kate, on the other hand, is a lot closer to her book counterpart.
Or, at least, thats the impression viewers get if they know the story beforehand.

Its almost as if Gileads regime was already decades old, and not newly instated.
However, the movie doesnt expand much on what it receives from its source material.
Instead, it cuts things off.

This time, the voiceover was not cut.
Who Is This Movie For?
But even though Schlondorffs movie is far from being a cinematic masterpiece, it still has its merits.

Then why was it so quickly forgotten?
Well, for starters, production and distribution company Cinecom Pictures wasnt sure which audience this movie was for.
Now she belongs to the State.

The closest one could get to the actual theme of the film was One woman’s story.
Every woman’s fear, which is just plain weak.
