Here, he dials back his usual aggressivenessto play a protagonist who survives on wit rather than bullets.
One scene has him evading one of the killers in the bathroom of a train stop.
At one point, Caufield is confronted by a boy with a water gun threatening to shoot him.
Even witha softer Hackman performance than usual,he still delivers on the action front under Hyams direction.
Hackman is at his most physical when he tangles with the final killer on top of the moving train.
Its a reminder of what made him sucha reliable player in every movie he ever appeared in.
