Not knowing when theyll be called, the hopefuls are forced to squander anticipation.
And then not knowing if they made it through until the very end?
Unfortunately, that energy doesnt come through the screen.
Returning after the experiment last season, the Idol Arena just doesn’t cut it.
It gave us a reason to tune into Hollywood week.
But it goes beyond the format.
It’s about the sound.
OnThe Voice, every performance, no matter what round, is accompanied by a full-force band.
Here, its a piano and a dream.
The Idol Arena is missing the pizzazz.
Its fine thatAmerican Idolwants to lead us down the path of feel-good television, but how interesting is that?
Especially over the course of a two-hour episode.
Then, we move into themed segments.
LikeBaylee LittrellandLola Bonfigliobeing clumped together as the “nepo” hopefuls.
Then there’s the early audition favorites floundering in a montage of sour notes and pitchy performances.
We get some tension whenJamal RobertshearsLandynn Kennedysing the song he was planning to perform.
The featured hopefuls are extraordinary, but it’s just pushing viewers in a specific direction.
Back in the day, we used to celebrate the worst to defeat the best.
Can we tune in when we get to the voting rounds?
The short answer is yes.
There is too much fluff as it stands now.
American Idol’s mission statement is about fostering the next singing sensation.
Idol Arena is backfiring.
If you missed this episode, it’s not the end of the world.
Simply based on the teaser for the next two episodes, that’s where things will get interesting.
For now, congrats to the 62 hopefuls still in the game and moving onto the Showstoppers round.
Lets hope the 2-night event is more exciting than this!
