Great science fiction isnt just about laser blasters, murderous aliens, and exploding space ships.
Put simply: aliens blowing stuff up sells talky explorations of the human condition?
Then again, calling2001: A Space Odysseyscience fiction' might itself be a misnomer.
Strangely enough, you wont find the answer to that question from any of2001s human characters.
2001is preoccupied with the idea of transcendent evolution, but it isnt afraid to examine its costs, either.
If2001is about anything, then maybe its about this: what is humanity when its no longer human?
